Achilles prove they may be upstate New York's most genre-bending, worthy-of-our-time metal/hardcore act around with their sophomore full-length, Hospice.

Hospice is assuredly a step up from the also excellent The Dark Horse, which combined some of the best aspects from heavy but ambitious acts like Botch and Breather Resist. Achilles seem to forge their own territory here, diversifying their sound and concentrating less on atmospherics and more on a heavy base, mixed up tempos and interchanging riffs. "We Are Fixtures" is one of the best examples of this, in addition to being possibly Hospice's best track; Rory Vangrol (also of How We Are) kicks it up a notch repetitively screaming "wake up, wake up! We're losing everything!," and leads the charge perfectly -- rarely has Achilles sounded this urgent, while the band floor the listener with a breathtaking sense of dynamics.

As it's comparatively soothing in regards to the rest of Hospice, "Dear Old Tyger That Sleeps" represents Achilles' new "quiet side"; Pelican-like riffs soar and crash, while Vangrol roars like he was Aaron Turner's brother. At 2:32, it's definitely an economical representation of that Hydra Head post-metal style, but Achilles does it extremely well all the same.

Even on The Dark Horse there was a sense of restraint running through Achilles' songs, but its vibe seems to be refreshingly retooled here. On another of Achilles' standout efforts, "Standing Night," the band seem to take cues from the monstrous, epic hardcore of bands like the ever-influencing Modern Life Is War, yet retain their own identity with the song's dangling bassline, riffs that echo and bounce off each other, and the Poseidon-esque boom of "cities burn and tides will rise!."

If that's not enough, "In These Stark Halls" is a 47-second tear-through that might recall, for some, Vangrol's other band, or frankly any band that plays perfect bursts of balls out, ridiculously intense hardcore.

Hospice is an astoundingly diverse and strong followup to Achilles' overlooked debut. Distinct, all-around solid and constantly ferocious, Hospice is a thirty-minute must for those seeking a healthy dose of artistry and effort with their heavy listening.

Ein vergleichsweise ruhiges Mathcore Album, das sich als "grower" entpuppt hat. Herrlich depressive Grundstimmung, schön fiese Stimme und ein mächtiger Sound mit der ein oder anderen Dissonanz, ohne jedoch die Stimmigkeit des Songwritings zu beschädigen. [9/10]

Aufs erste Ohr gefällts mir, werd das, wenn ich mal Ruhe hab, nochmal hören und dann sacken lassen

Kannte ich noch nicht und tönt auch ziemlich gut. Bleibt mal im Fokus.

Allerdings wundert mich es etwas, dass sie dir gefällt @humus

Für deine Verhältnisse eigentlich ziemlich unspektakuläre Mucke.

weis jetzt nicht so recht was ich noch als grund schreiben soll, ausser oben genanntem.

düsteren post-hardcore / mathcore höre ich seid Breach - venom (1999) oder Botch - we are the romans (2000). die machen langsam und depressiv, was dillinger escape plan - Calculating Infinity (1999) schnell und aggressiv machen. beide versionsn zähle ich zu mathcore.

achilles fallen da auch drunter.

das math-genre besteht ja nicht nur aus krummen takten, sondern auch aus einigen thematischen festlegungen, zum beispiel das verhältnis mensch-maschine, meist als venichtende, oder zerstörender technik, die dennoch, obwohl zerstörend, beibehalten, weiter angewendet wird und düsteren zukunftsvisionen im allgemein.

das drückt sich neben der technischen musik (klar, elektrisch verstärkte instrumente, aber auch hohes mass an können und instrumentbeherrschung also auch "technische" instrumentalisierung voraussetzt und eben auch den hörer dazu zwingt sich an diesen un-menschnlichen, weil mathematisch-technisch zerhackten sound zu gewöhnen)
auch in covergestaltung aus. siehe hier die fabrik von achilles, düster, menschenleer, aber voll in betrieb. ebenso z.b. calculating infinity, die dillingerscheibe mit den kabeln vorne drauf..
als auch in den texten, die sich um entmenschlichte technik, oder deren psychische folgen dreht. hier mal ein textbeispiel von Botch:

post-hardcore hat meistens klargesang, siehe neuere dillinger alben, weswegen ich mir's nicht anhören kann. wiederspricht auch irgendwie dem maschinen-gedanken des "mathcore", wenn man emotionsreichen menschlichen klargesang verwendet, und nicht nur das verzerrte, oder verstellte grunzen, kreischen, shouten des hardcore sänger.


also so im gesamten, die texte und das cover z.B. mal dazugenommen, finde ich es eine schöne mathcore scheibe, wenn auch die "technisierung" bei achilles weniger thema ist. also weder textlich, noch musikalisch. es wird fast nur der menschlich-emotionale untergang zelebriert. das ist auch schon schön
