So, dann mal wieder was selbst Produziertes aus der Umgebung, diesmal das Longplayer-Debuet der Gothic Deather von Banner Of Wrath. Die seit 1995 existierende Band hatte es bisher grad mal auf eine 4-Song Demo aus dem Jahre 99 gebracht, es war also an der Zeit, Naegel mit Koepfen zu machen. Die Band war im Laufe ihrer Geschichte schon sehr vielen Besetzungswechseln ausgesetzt, so dass von den Gruendungsmitgliedern inzwischen nur noch Bluhm mit von der Partie ist. Mittlerweile hat sich das Line-Up mit Bluhm, Sunny, Andy und September aber so weit stabilisiert, dass das Projekt "CD" angegangen werden konnte.
Auf Through A Decade Of Wrath bieten die Muenchner ueber eine Stunde lang mit Gothic-Elementen versetzten Death Metal der melodischeren Art, wobei auch gelegentliche Ausfluege in schwarzmetallische Gefilde gewagt werden. Keine alltaegliche Mixtur und das hoert man auch, die Musik hat ihren ganz eigenen Stil und Charme. Die Geschwindigkeit der Songs bewegt sich meist im eher getragenen Bereich, wodurch die ganze Scheibe eine recht entspannte, dabei aber immer fesselnde Atmosphaere verbreitet. Keines der Stuecke ist unter vier Minuten lang, Schnellschuesse sucht man also vergebens. Eine besondere Note erhaelt das Werk durch das Wechselspiel zwischen Sunnys Gesang und Bluhms Gegrowle und Gekeife, dadurch baut sich bei den jeweiligen Songs eine recht unterhaltsame Spannung auf. Auch Sunnys Geige gibt den Tracks ein eigenes Gesicht, Massenware ist das beileibe nicht. Fuer eine selbst produzierte Scheibe klingt die CD recht ordentlich, da habe ich schon schlechtere Label-Outputs bewerten muessen. Und an den Instrumenten machen die vier eine ganz gute Figur, alles klingt stimmig und solide gespielt.
Natuerlich gibt es auch ein paar Sachen, die man noch verbessern koennte. Bluhms Gesang beispielsweise: Sein Keifen geht absolut in Ordnung und auch seine Growls sind immer passend eingesetzt, aber der Klargesang ist dann schon recht grenzwertig. Hier besteht noch die ein oder andere Verbesserungsmoeglichkeit, auch wenn diese Parts zum Glueck nicht allzu haeufig sind. Dann koennte man bei ein paar Breaks, die etwas holprig wirken, noch etwas nachpolieren, aber auch hier sind diese Momente gluecklicherweise recht selten. Und das Instrumental "Red Whine" finde ich ein wenig unnoetig, irgendwie passiert bei diesem Stueck nichts. Bei einer Spielzeit von ueber einer Stunde kann man diese vier Minuten aber locker verschmerzen.
Bleibt eigentlich nur noch festzustellen, dass es sich bei dieser CD um eine ausgesprochen unterhaltsame und vor allem nicht alltaegliche Angelegenheit handelt. Feine Sache, die Lust auf mehr macht!

Zitat:Formed in 1991, Farmers Market is a Norwegian quintet that specializes in Balkan-jazz fusion. Led by multi-instrumentalist Stian Carstensen (accordion, guitar, banjo, kaval), the group has sporadically functioned over the last seventeen years, releasing just three albums (one live) before Surfin’ USSR. The band has worked with a spate of guest musicians, including American composer/saxophonist Michael Brecker and clarinetist Filip Simeonov from Taraf de Haidouks.
Surfin’ USSR begins with a grimy surf riff that is met with fluttering horns, high-pitched guitar chords, and a feverish Balkan sound. A quick bridge merges the Balkan sound with tablas, and the guitar plays the famous 007 chords over the rejoined brass.
The album’s third track then breaks the established style. The string-filled tune is cinematic, and merges reverberated Hawaiian slide guitar solos with tablas. A touch of bluegrass appears in the following song after a funky wah pedal. Traditional world vocals are scattered about the album; low-register chants roll underneath heavy guitar work on the disc’s sixth song.
The stylistic mash is typical of Farmers Market. Its second album, Musikk Fra Hybridene, fused elements like bluegrass, metal, classical, and commercial music with jazz, rock, and Balkan tunes. Surfin’ USSR draws fewer parallels to Mr. Bungle, Naked City, or Estradasphere, but remains as prolific in synthesis and as talent infused as its peers.

While it might sound a bit out there, there are quite a few similarities between the both styles, most notable is that both genres feature runs of single note solos at breakneck speeds. The leader of the group, Stian Carstensen is an accordion player from Norway. The other two featured soloists are Nils Olav Johansen on guitars and Bulgarian reedist Trifon Trifonov. The highlights of the album are the many occasions where the 3 soloists trade off on blazing fast rifs. To round out the CD there is a touch of humor and a touch of a few other genres. The album titles and themes are a spoof on the main concept of Surf music and Eastern Europe/USSR during the cold war. In addition to the surf and gypsy music there are also a few touches of eccentric Asian music and blue grass (w/ banjo playing) throw in. A few or the tracks feature vocals that are actually quite good, but most of the album is w/o vocals. Here is the lineup.

Groesstenteils instrumental ist auch diese neue Ipecac Veroeffentlichung. Akkordeon, Surf, Klezmer, Hula, Folk, Arabian, Pop und ein bisschen Jazz werden hier zu einem erstaunlich homogenen Sound zusammengefuegt. Alles Mid-tempo und mit dem Understatement gespielt, als waere diese Mischung das selbstverstaendlichste Radio-geduedel der Welt.
Eine wunderschoene musikalische Entdeckungsreise, aber ich habs gern etwas aggressiver und bissiger, deswegen geb ich nur schlappe 7/10

What is "math-rock"? This seemingly pervasive musical description/genre is a curious term and to the uninitiated could conjure up the sight of a) gawky fellas making tunes on abacuses or b) bearded Scottish men in lumberjack shirts pratting around with soft metal and funny time signatures. You see, it"s a daft term and one which You Slut!s press release makes rather pained reference to. This Midlands quartet play what can be described as instrumental-pop-metal, with not a vocal in sight but plenty of buggering about with, yes, funny time signatures. Whilst this on paper all sounds rather ghastly, You Slut! get around this potential problem by not taking themselves particularly seriously (the name and the song titles alone are delightfully daft) and crafting a mini-album which is high on thrills and high on many unexpectedly catchy moments.

The first thing of note is the sheer technical proficiency of the whole thing - stripped of vocals one is left in appreciation of just how tight this lot are as they blast through 8 songs of jawbreaking riffs, ridiculous drumming and plenty of playfulness and creativity of song structure. This would all be a waste if the songs themselves werent worth listening to - and most of them are. YS! burst with melodic riffage in the Tom Morello mould, delivered at breakneck speed and with an appreciation of "what makes a good pop song" buried underneath. The first single, MyBloodyJesusExplorerOnFire is a mighty and rather beautiful blast of shoegaze meets Slayer and displays that underneath their contrasting daftness/guitar geek shtick they have the potential to appeal to a wider audience. What on initial listening sounds like the workings of a naff in-joke, You Slut! could actually be one of British rock musics most interesting newcomers.

Kein ueber-Album, aber sehr angenehmer instrumenteller Mathrock ohne extreme Experimente. Laeuft jetzt bestimmt zum 20zigsten Mal im Hintergrund, waehrend ich diese Zeilen tippe und ist bisher weder nervig, noch langweilig geworden. Kann Prog-hoerern eigentlich nicht nicht gefallen
