Geschrieben von: Wizz21 - 22.08.2009, 10:00 - Forum: The Mixed Zone & The Halfpipe - Antworten (33)

  Danger Danger - Revolve (2009)
Geschrieben von: Wizz21 - 21.08.2009, 18:45 - Forum: The Hard Rock Café & Dragon's Lair - Antworten (1)

[Bild: dangerdanger-revolveqvyo.jpg]

Zitat:Five years after they announced Ted Poley had rejoined Danger Danger and 20 years after the release of their debut, Danger Danger returns with “Revolve”. Was it worth the wait? I guess that depends if you are a fan of the Danger Danger from 20 years ago with songs filled with sexual innuendo such as “Naughty Naughty” and “Slipped Her The Big One” or an older more mature band with 20+ years of music business experience behind them. I happen to be a fan of both and have made no secret of how much I was looking forward to hearing the new music. While I liked the albums with Paul Laine on vocals, Ted Poley will always be the voice of Danger Danger to me, and he has never sounded better than he does on “Revolve”.

“That”™s What I”™m Talking About” starts “Revolve” off and while I don”™t think it is the best way to open the album it is a great song that makes you want to crank the stereo up and sing at the top of your lungs, the rhythm section of Steve West and Bruno Ravel sound as great as ever and Rob Marcello plays guitar like a man obsessed. “the Ghost of Love” is a great melodic rocker the band is famous for as tight as the band sounds you would never think it has been 11 years since Ravel, West, and Poley were in the studio together. “Killin”™ Love” has some slow driving bass lines and though it is a slower mid tempo song it still makes you want to crank it up and sing along. “Hearts On The Highway” can”™t say enough about this song it is classic Danger Danger at their best, great melodies, great hooks and background vocals one of the best on the album. “Fugitive” is a ballad with acoustic guitars, piano, and strings starting things off which could give the guys a Top 40 hit if released as a single. “Keep On Keepin”™ On” would be my pick as the album opener this is a great summertime song yet another track that makes you want to crank it up and sing along as your flying down the highway, probably Rob Marcello”™s best solo on the album and another one of the best songs on “Revolve”. “Rocket To Your Heart” once again classic Danger Danger, Ted Poley sounds great on this song as does Bruno”™s bass. “F.U. $” is an anthem about exactly what the title suggests filled with some great gang vocals, another nice solo from Marcello that should go over well live. “Beautiful Regret” is a heavy modern sounding song but fits perfectly on “Revolve”. “Never Give Up” is a mid tempo song that would”™ve fit perfectly on the band”™s debut or “Screw It” once again classic Danger Danger sound. Leave it to Danger Danger to save the best for last with “Dirty Mind” not only does Poley sound great the band as a whole really nail this song a great rocking song and the perfect way to close “Revolve”.

No matter what you think of Danger Danger they definitely deserve some respect. While alot of other “80”™s” bands have dried up and blown away these guys kept putting out some great music and with Ted Poley back in the band I believe it is only going to get better. I just hope it isn”™t another 5 years before the follow-up to “Revolve” is released. (Quelle: hardrockhideout.com)

Danger Danger:

Ted Poley – vocals
Rob Marcello – guitars
Bruno Ravel – bass
Steve West – drums

Wub

Meine Wertung: 8,5 fette Punkte!

Novembers Doom - Into Night's Requiem Infernal (2009)

01. Into Night's Requiem Infernal
02. Eulogy For The Living Lost
03. Empathy's Greed
04. The Fifth Day Of March
05. Lazarus Regret
06. I Hurt Those I Adore
07. The Harlots Lie
08. When Desperation Fills The Void

Zitat:The announcement of a new NOVEMBER”™S DOOM album is now something that I greet with great anticipation. Ever since 2005”™s "Pale Haunt Departure" changed my perception of what Doom Metal could be, I have had this band in regular rotation on my CD player. With 2007”™s "The Novella Reservoir", the band could have changed their name to "November”™s Death," as that album was easily their heaviest yet, with faster tempos and fewer slow melancholic parts, although there were a couple of great songs with only clean singing. Some complained about this heavier direction, although I was fine with it as long as the quality of the songs stayed at the same level.

NOVEMBER”™S DOOM was formed all the way back in 1989, although the only original member remaining is vocalist Paul Kuhr. However, they did not release their first album until 1995 and have overall released a total of seven albums. A live DVD, entitled "The Novella Vosselaar: Live in Belgium" arrived in 2008.

There was a high amount of expectation among the band”™s fans. Some thought that NOVEMBER”™S DOOM would continue in the heavily death-metal influenced direction of their last album, while others thought that the band would return to the sound of the previous album. Others even thought that this album would have a completely new sound. It turns out that "Into Night”™s Requiem Infernal" could be described as a mix between "Pale Haunt Departure" and 2002”™s "To Welcome the Fade", although that description really only for people who want a basic idea of what to expect.

The truth is that NOVEMBER”™S DOOM largely avoids repeating themselves. Some bands fall into a groove into how they write their songs or arrange their albums, but that is not the case here. The past two albums started with furious Death Metal epics, while the first three songs are largely mid-paced. Kuhr even growls over acoustic guitar in "Eulogy for the Living Lost", which I don”™t recall them doing before (it definitely works better than one might think). One big advantage of this album is the level of consistency. Every album before this had a noticeable dip in quality in the second half of the album. "Lazarus Regret" and especially "I Hurt Those I Adore" ensure that the second half is strong.

The main downside of "Into Night”™s Requiem Infernal" is that there are no songs that approach the same exceptional level as "Swallowed by the Moon" or "Drown the Inland Mere". Even though the guitars are still really heavy, there”™s nothing as crushing as "Rain" or "The Pale Haunt Departure". Even the quiet songs aren”™t nearly as good. The quiet songs are probably the biggest disappointment here. It”™s not that the songs on this album aren”™t solid, because they are, it is just that they just don”™t approach the levels of their previous output.

Despite the criticisms mentioned above, the music and vocal performances are still very good and this album is definitely worth owning. The consistency is a definite bonus. The artwork is solid, but unspectacular. NOVEMBER”™S DOOM has given us another winner, it just isn”™t a masterpiece like their previous two.

No Turning Back - Stronger (2008)
Geschrieben von: chris2711 - 21.08.2009, 13:50 - Forum: The Mixed Zone & The Halfpipe - Antworten (2)

Zitat:[Bild: 02110.jpg]

For over a decade No Turning Back has been churning out release after release - CD, vinyl, and cassette - of punishing New York flavored hardcore. And while you would think the band's location were the mean streets of NYC, these boys actually call the beauty of The Netherlands home. Don't worry! You're not the first to be fooled.

Stronger packs a mean punch straight from the start with “Same Sad Song.” You're immediately smacked in the face with thick riffs provided by Emiel while the rhythm section of Giel and robin provide a solid groove to match. Martijn's vocal style is very reminiscent of Madball's Freddy Cricien - it's uncanny how eerily similar the two sound.

No Turning Back crush through track after track with this formula. “Go Away” is a great example; the mid-song break and Sick of it All-esque breakdown at the end are spectacular. “Never Again” is another favorite of mine - the early 90's sound they deliver is too good not to enjoy it. “Found My Way” could easily be a Madball cover.

The band gets a little help throughout the album. The title-track boasts guest vocals from David Wood of Down to Nothing. His more forceful and coarse delivery provides a nice contrast as the two trade off verses. Dan Mills of Cold World helps out vocally on “Unfair” while his bandmate Alex Russin throws in a slick guitar solo to spice things up.

While the album has its strengths, it also has it weaker moments. The sub-minute bursts of “I Rise” and “Move Along” feel rather undeveloped. In addition, there is that feeling of repetitiveness as you listen. Although, this could be due to my numerous spins of the album lately”¦ so take that as it is.

Stronger is exactly what you'd expect to hear from No Turning Back. Thick groove-driven hardcore with that New York Hardcore bite to it. While nothing new by any means, it's still quality tunes, and you can't deny that.
