We be the Echo - Stanislaw Stories (2006)
Genre: instrumental Mathrock

5 That's No Goon, That's a Space Station
6 Drain in Flood
7 Supermodel Snakepit
8 Tooth Sea
9 Constellation Sandwich
Zitat:Melodic math rock with an experimental/metal slant has been called "math rock worth putting in your calculator" by Punk Planet. Also know as 'brutal prog' or 'brutal shred prog'.

Zitat:It seems that a majority of new instrumental/post-rock acts these days focus on epic length, dynamically swelling, reverb soaked melodic arrangements for a wide variety of instruments. Apparently San Francisco three piece We Be The Echo didn”™t get the memo.Of the nine frantic songs on their debut long player Stanislaw Stories, none last longer then 4 minutes, yet each piece contains enough variety and energy to keep the listener busy. For just three members with a minimal amount of studio trickery, the individual talent and creativity of the musicians involved create a dense, melodic, and at times chaotic listening experience.
Definitely enrolled in the Don Caballero school of post-indie math core, We Be The Echo are a tight unit of Hella-esque time signature destructions, maniacal drum fills that would make any Lightning Bolt fan weep, and throw in a slice of Minus The Bear fueled guitar jangle for good measure. The band flawlessly travel through different styles of Chicago born math rock, tossing in the occasional beautifully melodic breaks (“Dry or Damp, I”™m Still The Champ), and even a throw back, classic rock guitar shred (“Don”™t Concentrate On The Finger...”).
This is an impressive debut for three obviously talented musicians. Channeling their virtuosity into a nice batch of high energy post-rock, We Be The Echo will be a band to watch for in this ever evolving scene.

habe bisher zwei alben von denen (Stanislaw Stories, all-star destroyers) die beide nicht sehr aggresiven, aber dennoch anspruchsvollen und meist schnellen instumentellen Mathrock enthalten, der auch mal kleine versatzstücke aus anderen genres einbaut, ohne dabei stilbruch/genre hopping zu betreiben, z.B. flameco elemente in dry or damp, i'm still the champ. sind insgesamt ein wenig chaotischer als LITE oder Giraffes? Giraffes! ... so eine art entspannte und instrumentale Hella vielleicht? na egal: 8,5/10

VÖ: 2008
Genre: Neo Grunge / Psych
Label: Razor & Tie
Herkunftsland: USA
Für Fans von: frühe Nirvana, My Mourning Jacket, Deprirock
Tracklist:
01. Heavy Petting
02. The Rat
03. Goner
04. It Was a Rose
05. Yer Circus
06. All the Angels
07. Start Me Laughing
08. News Underneath
09. Flesh Colored Canvas
10. Wrecking Ball
Zitat:Sure Dead Confederate has one of the best band names in rock, but as their name suggests, they stand out amongst their peers with ragged space rock elements that leap with wailing jams and harrowing unpredictability. Their debut full length Wrecking Ball shines with a dark sound that combines the indie credibility of early Nirvana with the ragged glory of Neil Young & Crazy Horse. This isn”™t surprising considering the band lists On the Beach (Neil Young), Meddle (Pink Floyd) and Bleach (Nirvana) as their key influential albums. And as the bands lays special thanks to Jerry Joseph and Dave Schools in the linear notes, you kind of know what direction this music takes- dark, jammy and gritty.
From the driving hard rock of “Heavy Petting” to the buzz worthy energy of “The Rat,” Dead Confederate lays out a legion of winners. Lead singer Hardy Morris certainly has a knack for Kurt Cobain like shrills, but has an urgent growl humming atop his dark lyrics. The songs themselves aren”™t built for the radio, with many of them clocking in at over five minutes. And just when the band decides to rock with its cock out on “Start Me Laughing, “ it does its Pink Floyd thing on “The News Underneath” and the 12 minute “Flesh Colored Canvas.” And with My Morning Jacket recently gone funky, this could be the psychedelic, echoing alt-country to those that like their rock to rawk.

Persönlicher Nachtrag:
"The Rat" steht in meinen Top5 Songs des Jahres 2008.

Genre: Stoner / Psychedelic Rock
Label: Brainticket
Herkunftsland: Neuseeland
Für Fans von: Supergiant
Tracklist:
01. Magnetise
02. Sunshine In Purple
03. Reaching Out
04. Euphoria
05. Voyage
06. Mantra
Zitat:Currently causing a big stir on the Stoner Rock scene, New Zealand's Datura are now taking the world by storm with this, their second album following in the wake of the now legendary Allisone. Approaching the Hard Rock/Stoner sound from a slightly different angle to many of the more 'metal' sounding Stoner bands, Datura apply much more of an Acid feel to their music.
There are many, many bands jumping on the Stoner bandwagon, with most just churning out bland, lumbering sludge. In our opinion, Datura are up there with the the 'big boys' such as Kyuss and Monster Magnet and deserve all the credit they get because this album is packed full of acid soaked monster riffs, awesomeley relentless drumming and spaced out vocals. Sure this is Stoner Rock but it's roots are firmly in the heavy psychedelia of Blue Cheer, Jimi Hendrix and the MC5. The distorted wah wah of 'Magnetise' delivered in a powered up Hendrix style opens the album and is a fine opening track setting the pace for what is an awesome album. 'Sunshine in purple' is big, heavy psych guitar, backed up by Craig Williamson's pulsing bass and powerful vocals. 'Reaching out' is a lot harder, faster and heavier. 'Euphoria', perhaps the stongest track, is full of heavy swirling guitar and spaced out effects. 'Voyage' changes down a gear in a powerful Kyuss sounding style. All too soon this excellent album is over, but not before the awesome psychedelic epic that is 'Mantra' takes you on one last trip, slowly building up layers of trippy effects, carried along by a meandering guitar jam.
Strapped on the front of this stonking album is one of the best covers we've seen for a while (by Franz Landl) click on the pic below to check it out.
We strongly recommend scoring one of these if you are a fan of Heavy Psych/Stoner.
