Die neue Band des Ex-Discordance Axis Vokalisten praesentiert hier ein 12 minuetiges Highspeed Grindcoremassaker der Extraklasse. Wow!
Zitat:I knew nothing about this prior to putting it in, but the short track lengths clued me in that it would either be something experimental and ambient, or maybe grindcore.
Its grindcore alright, but executed with the speed and ferocity of black metal - like Anaal Nathrakh covering Slayer at double-time. Now, grind sometimes devolves into a spastic battery of blastbeats and interchangeable riffs, but each track on Amber Gray is tight, technical and offers a wealth of sharp, vicious riffs. Despite the abbreviated running time, theres a lot going on here - so much great stuff that I wish theyd have let the songs go on longer. Its amazing that they can pack so much progression and flow into these brutal little compositions, but without ever losing your attention - hell, theres no time to do that.
If theres one thing that does get old here, its Jon Changs (ex-Discordance Axis) vocals - harsh, psychotic and painfully constant. Remember the scene in Day of the Dead where one of Rhodes men gets his head torn off by a pack of zombies? Remember how his gargled scream modulated in pitch as his vocal cord stretched and tore? Well, freeze that note just before the final tear, and then set that on repeat. Its definitely a shock at first, but the unwavering speed and high presence in the mix soon makes it kinda tiresome. Some more variance - or an occasional break - wouldve helped here, but again, probably no time for that.
HydraHead is offering this release at full-price, which I guess is de rigeur for grind, despite the length (12 minutes). Still, its impressive to see so much technicality and flow packed into such a compact experience.

Zitat:One Step Beyond are a band from Australia that plays a pretty eclectic form of extreme metal. Beyond Good and Evil is their latest CD, and second overall. The band are in the process of adding a second guitarist after the passing of their co-founder Jeremy Lammas last year (he played all the guitars on this CD), as well as auditioning for a live drummer. On this CD, bass, vocals, and beat programming was handled by Mad Matt, with vocals also provided by Justin. In the band currently as well is guitarist Rufus. The music? Well, its hard to describe. At times this is like a mix of Faith No More, Primus, Dillinger Escape Plan, Frank Zappa, and Napalm Death, although you can hear bits of jazz, reggae, and funk at times. The first half of the CD is pretty much in the metal camp, with raging death/grind pieces like "True Faced", "Birth of Disease", and "Maniac/Watch Your Back" mixed in with the more Primus flavored material like "The Party" and "Everyday". Mad Matts bass licks are outstanding throughout, and coupled with some tasty riffs from the late Lammas, made for a potent brew. As extreme as some of the songs are, theres always this underpinning of funk that really sets this stuff apart. Vocally, these guys are all over the map, as you hear a variety of screams, shouts, and growls, some of which may or may not work for you depending on your taste.
However, later on you get hit with some spacey reggae/hip hop/space rock material like "Black Light Blue" and "Depth of Mind", which really throws a wrinkle in things. Fear not though, as the band rages back with blistering extreme metal like "Made for Cable" and "Foot High Tough Guy" (love that title!) to let you know where their allegiance really lies. It all makes for a very unique listening experience, and it should be interesting to see where these guys go from here.
Oh yeah, and the cover art by Pierre Bourgeault is very cool as well!

sehr basslastiger funky death metal, mit einigen abstechern in andere groovende gefielde. nicht sonderlich komplizierte mucke, aber eigenstaendig. macht spass. 7/10
