After his computer was stolen, Jose Caceres used a remote access program to log on every day and watch it being used. The laptop was stolen on Sept. 4, when he left it on top of his car while carrying other things into his home. "It was kind of frustrating because he was mostly using it to watch porn," Caceres said. "I couldn't get any information about him." Last week the thief messed up and registered on a web site with his name and address. Jose alerted the police, who arrested a suspect a few hours later. The moral of the story: never go to a porn site where you have to register.

wie gut ^^
gibt ja auch nette kleine programme, die alle paar minuten doer bei bewegung per notebook-webcam fotos machen und die automatisch im hintergrund auf einen server hochladen. da kann man unter umständen auch glück mit haben. praktisch wäre auch eingebautes GPS...hmm!

wenn das notebook drinnen steht wird das aber relativ wenig bringen... man müsste das gps ständig mit strom versorgen, eventuell per sms aktivieren wenns gestohlen wird und das notebook sendent dann die letzten gps daten per sms zurück man bräuchte halt noch n sim-slot, ne prepaid sim vllt. und n gsm transmitter..

p.s. wer sowas bauen will, ich will 50% der einnahmen

An anonymous reader mentions Google Flu Trends, a newly unveiled initiative of Google.org, Google's philanthropic arm. The claim is that this Web service, which aggregates search data to track outbreaks of influenza, can spot disease trends up to 2 weeks before Centers for Disease Control data can. The NYTimes writeup begins: "What if Google knew before anyone else that a fast-spreading flu outbreak was putting you at heightened risk of getting sick? And what if it could alert you, your doctor and your local public health officials before the muscle aches and chills kicked in? That, in essence, is the promise of Google Flu Trends, a new Web tool... unveiled on Tuesday, right at the start of flu season in the US. Google Flu Trends is based on the simple idea that people who are feeling sick will tend to turn to the Web for information, typing things like 'flu symptoms; or 'muscle aches' into Google. The service tracks such queries and charts their ebb and flow, broken down by regions and states."
