  Crystal Viper - Metal Nation

Zitat:Von THOR "(metal webzine!)"

Zitat:All of a sudden the Canadian formation Blackguard gets loads of attention, for they are the winners of the worldwide MySpace band contest organised by Nuclear Blast in 2008 and they scooped a contract with this famous metal label. This brought the career of the epic folk metal band – already paving their paths in their native country for a while – in a rapid. Until now they were known as Profugus Mortis, and to preserve this link with the past, they called this worldwide debut album ”˜Profugus Mortis”™.

Listening to this vigorous, spirited album it soon gets obvious that we are not dealing with a starting band right here. The extremely fluent manner in which they present us duels between guitars and keyboards shows technical skilfulness one only sees with experienced musicians. This sextet hailing from Montréal appears to be formed in 2001, initially as pure black metal band. Due to several line-up changes – particularly the recruitment of vocalist Paul “Ablaze” Zinary heralded a first turning point – they evolved towards a more folksy approach. When violinist Emilie Livernois left Profugus Mortis in 2007, she was replaced by guitarist Kim Gosselin and he would turn into an important acquisition. Beside a number of demos, the band released a full length album ”˜So It Begins”™ (2007) and the EP ”˜Another Round”™ (2008), but these might be hard to find in Europe.

The music on ”˜Profugus Mortis”™ is very energetic. ”˜Scarlet To Snow”™ starts in a cinematic way, but then the multilayered music cuts loose in a proper fast pace with opulent fast and furious guitar skills and lively keyboard parts. One may call this a blend of Children Of Bodom and Finntroll, especially because the keyboard parts include most of the folkloristic patterns and that”™s why they remind me of Henri Sorvali from time to time. Due to the orchestral keys, a song such as ”˜In Time”™ is a bit evocative of Turisas. The galloping riffs and polka rhythms are competently completed by shouter Paul Ablaze, who has a raucous, gravel-like throat. Ultimately rough, though his vocal energy gets a bit too much for me towards the end. Nevertheless this is a very mature debut – if we may call it that way – and I want to make a special mention of the firmly rocking keyboards in ”˜Cinder”™ and ”˜Vain”™. Blackguard is ready for worldwide domination, but first they will be touring intensively in Canada and the United States as part of the Pagan fest II tour, together with Eluveitie, Moonsorrow, Korpiklaani, Primordial and Swashbuckle in April 2009.

Die Jungs haben 2008 einen Bandcontest von Nuclear Blast gewonnen und als Belohnung dort einen Plattenvertrag erhalten. Alter Name der Band ist der Albumtitel.

Zitat:Inevitable End is a metal act founded in 2003 from Jonkoping, Sweden. Starting out highly influenced by thrash metal they have gone through some changes in developing their musical skills to which they present themselves as they are today. Which brings us to knowing about their LP debut entitled “The Severed Inception,” this being more advanced work than their previously self-titled EPs.

Yes indeed these 9-tracks comprised brings out these cocooned caterpillars expressing themselves as they do best when creating well crafted music. Starting off with the title track brings fast racing beats of adrenaline from the drums which is followed up by the guitar riffs crafted together piece by piece as the vocals take center stage letting the growling vocals finish the job sending your heart pulsing faster than your blood can move. “Dreamsight Synopsis,” has the same vibrations but doesn”™t bring out as much energy and adrenaline as the opener does leaving the other tracks on this album to be an uproar leading to a downward spiral. Another track to look for “Firstborn of All Dead,” which shows the real meaning of the undead after party; getting the energy moving rather slowly at the start but it stores itself as the song progresses little by little then explodes at the end with raving force you won”™t know what hit you.

The tunes are indeed put together well and show the inspiration that the music is creating having those fast quick jolted guitar riffs running with the blasting beats of the drums mixing in with the vocals compares highly similarities of Skinless and mixture of Miseration. “The Severed Inception,” intense energy bouncers going from a rush of fast racing force to a down sided medium energy builds.

Zitat:The past few years have seen the return of some great bands that disappeared a long time ago. We”™ve had both At the Gates and Carcass come back and start playing shows all over the world. We”™ve had Cynic and Believer take things one step further and release their first albums in over a decade, and we”™ve still got Atheist on the way. Another band that was always mentioned within the same breath as these bands was Pestilence, and oddly enough they”™re back too. I have to admit that of all these bands, Pestilence were the one that I was the least thrilled about. Their technical death metal was average at best and when they decided to dive into the jazz-fusion on Spheres it was pretty bad. Fortunately, I don”™t really have to waste any time bringing people up to date on these albums because Resurrection Macabre takes very little from them.

Admittedly, a lot of the reason that I just can”™t get into those older albums is the very weak productions (even for the time), but that”™s not a problem here. Pestilence have traded the thin, flimsy productions of their past for a literal wall of sound. The drums are powerful and the double bass is thunderous at all times. The guitars have also discarded their weak sound, trading it for a thick, yet sharp, tone with plenty of bottom end. The actual riffs themselves need to be highlighted as well because not only do they finally sound good, but they actually are good. The band have entirely discarded the lifeless riffs that despite any speed they may have had, never seemed to have any power, aggression or energy behind them. The riffs here are semi-technical death metal riffs that have a constant chaotic feeling to them, but that also never let up on a minor sense of melody. While we”™re pointing out improvements it must be mentioned that the thin growls of the past have also been replaced with deep guttural growls that are accentuated by backing black metal-ish growls.

So, it”™s pretty well established that great changes were made but it”™s still probably not all that clear what that really means for this album. If this album is your initial introduction to this band, just know that a close comparison could be made to Cannibal Corpse”™s latest album if it was combined with Killing Technology-era Voivod. For those unfamiliar with those bands as well (go find that Voivod album!), a better description is probably in order. The band takes chaotic and heavy riffs and deliver them in combination with some very weird, almost atonal, sounding chords and notes. This riff-style is generally played over fast, technical beats but the structure of each song allows for a lot of weird breaks and pace-changes to keep the listener off-balance and the songs fresh. The band also isn”™t above stopping on a dime to allow for the occasional bizarre and otherworldly sounding guitar solo over a jazzy backbeat. All of these improvements, as well as the overall stylistic change have made for a Pestilence album that still brings the technicality they were known for, but also introduces a heaviness and aggression they”™ve never have.

Admittedly, the stylistic changes are pretty drastic and it remains to be seen whether old fans will really take to the modern Pestilence sound. For the rest of us that never really listened to them (and for those not scared of change), the band has released the best album in their career. It”™s something that should instantly appeal to those into technical death metal, and will hopefully appeal to those older fans too. The band, almost as if extending an ”˜olive branch”™ to those older fans, have also included three re-recorded songs from previous albums (as chosen by the fans) and they”™re really good now. With everything the band are doing right, I see really good things for them now just so long as they don”™t find out Cynic has released “Traced in Air” and then start writing their next album.
