Über die BBS bin ich auf diese Band aufmerksam geworden, die haben das aktuelle Album einfach mal direkt zum Album des Monats erklärt, und was MySpace so durchscheinen lässt - absolut nicht zu unrecht. Einfach frischer, freier Prog Rock, wie ihn Echylon mal vor Jahren hat produziert, dazu wohl eine Queensryche Mindcrime´sche Story, die ich mangels Besitz des Tonträgers nicht überprüfen konnte.

Hier das Review der BBS´ler:

Zitat:Durch Zufall, und mit Hilfe der Kollegen vom Rock Hard, bin ich auf dieses Schätzchen aufmerksam geworden. Ein Glück, denn was die beiden Jungs aus Los Angeles hier abziehen, ist eine wahnwitzige, süchtig machende Kombination aus zahlreichen Zitaten großartiger klassischer Hard- und Progrockbands.

Das Konzeptwerk ist im Stile des Jahrhundertopus „Operation: Mindcrime“ von Queensrÿche gehalten. Fast jeder Songs wird mit Samples eingeleitet und beendet, was das Album noch mal ein Stück interessanter macht und man das Ding auf jeden Fall durchhören will.

Am effektivsten aber sind natürlich die Songs, die es absolut in sich haben. „Metropolis“ und „Elementary“ erinnern mit ihren treibenden Riffs, den Gesangsmelodien und dem Drumming an eine Mischung aus alten Iron Maiden und alten Rush, wobei „Metropolis“ sogar noch Queen-Anleihen zu bieten hat. Das ganze klingt absolut frisch und locker, niemals aufgesetzt oder anbiedernd, sondern macht einfach nur tierischen Spaß.

Aber nicht nur Rush und Queen haben die Jungs aus den US of A im Angebot. Bei „Alexanders Lament“ kommt einem unweigerlich eine gute alte Spock's Beard-Ballade aus der Zeit, als Neal Morse noch nicht alles gemacht hat, was Gott ihm gesagt hat, in den Sinn. „The Dream“ ist ein wahnsinnig mitreißender Rocksong im Midtempo-Bereich, der genauso gut auf einem der ersten Coheed And Cambria-Alben hätte stehen können und bei „Call To Arms“, „Escape“ und „The Knight“ treffen wiederum alte Rush auf Brian May. Großartig!

„Conditioning“ und „Winter“ bieten wunderbare Beatles-Gesangsmelodien, ebenfalls eingebettet in dem besten Rockgewand, das die alten Klassiker der Hardrock-/Progrockszene so hergeben.

Es ist unfassbar, wenn ich sehe, wer mittlerweile alles mit einem Plattenvertrag durch die Gegend läuft und dabei die schlimmste Grütze auf die arme Proggergemeinde loslässt, und solche Bands, wie die beiden Jungs von Heart Of Cygnus tatsächlich und allen ernstes noch ohne Deal rumwerkeln.

Das möge sich mit dem Zweitwerk, an dem die Band bereits arbeitet, bitte schleunigst ändern! Einfach mal eine doofe Dream Theater-Kopie weniger unter Vertrag nehmen, und dafür diese fantastische neue Band, die es versteht von der ersten bis zu letzten Minute mit frischer, abwechslungsreicher und hochwertiger Musik zu unterhalten.

„Utopia“ kann man, dank des immer noch guten Dollarkurses, recht günstig auf der Myspace-Seite direkt bei der Band erwerben.

Die Note halte ich bewusst noch etwas flach, weil ich davon ausgehe, dass dieses Schätzchen hier noch überboten werden kann und auch wird.

Zitat:We've heard the saying "Too many cooks spoil the broth." What do too many cooks do to a progressive rock album? We certainly have many such cooks on this debut disc from Shadrane: We have the brothers Bissonette (Matt and Gregg), Vivien Lalu, Joop Wolters, Henrik BÃ¥th of the fantastic Darkwater, Marco Sfogli (who played guitar on James LaBrie's Elements of Persuasion album), Gary Wehrkamp of Shadow Gallery...and that's only about half.

So, returning to the question: what do too many cooks do to the proverbial prog rock broth? They make a fine, fine album. Temporal is a fantastic mesh of different styles and a great album all around.

It's difficult to know where to begin in speaking about this album, as there's simply so much offered. Among its many strengths is the simple fact that there's so much going on. Even from the first track, Temporal, the band provides slow piano, mid-tempo prog, and some pretty heavy metal. Especially noteworthy about this track is the vocal performance of Darkwater's Henrik BÃ¥th. Those unfamiliar with Darkwater should find a pleasant surprise in his performance. In addition, the middle section of the song contains a heavier vocal performance with some backing grunts/growls. All of this falls within the four-and-a-half-minute first track.

The album offers plenty more, including tracks that could be labelled power metal, power prog, or even pop. For example, the slow yet powerful "Rainy" has a symphonic feel to it, especially in the chorus, yet contains some subtle touches that give it a more pop-oriented feel to it. "Lanterns Dance" starts with a keyboard sound that definitely gives it a far eastern feel. The later part of the song, however, provides a contrast between slow, clean vocals and near screaming. "Consider It" is another more straightforward song--a bit more pop influences are apparent, though the instrumentation is still very strong.

With such variety, though, there will almost certainly be some songs that don't appeal to every listener. Personally, Manzanar is one song that doesn't really sit well with me. The vocal styles are rather strange in many places: the opening vocals are a weird mix of singing and talking, and later in the song there are some high-pitched vocalizations and some repetitive half-screaming. In all, the track just doesn't seem put together very well.

A brief mention is owed to the concept of the album: the story of a Navy commander in charge of a U.S. submarine. In all honesty, the best description of the album's concept is available at this page on the Lion Music website. In short, though, the concept is quite involved, though somewhat difficult to glean from the lyrics alone.

There's some truly fantastic music to be found on this disc. The guest appearances from so many musicians seem, for the most part, to have a very positive effect upon the album's music. Barring a few of the less cohesive tracks, this is a wholly enjoyable album with tons of intricate details for listeners to discover. It's a disc I can highly recommend--but be prepared to find a track or two that you don't love.

Zitat:Don the Reader suffer from the complete opposite of what I do when I write songs. My tendency is to rely on chord progressions versus the almighty riff. Don the Reader have so many riffs on their new record Humanesque that after a few songs, it feels like you”™re hearing a riff you”™ve already heard. The main problem with reviewing this album is that those few songs that aren”™t reminiscent of other songs are straight up awesome.

Running that thought through my head also makes me ask the question – should the album be a five-track EP? Herein lies the paradox of this album. It can”™t be shorter because it wouldn”™t leave the impact that the whole record does, but at the length it is it gets a little repetitive.

In talking about the album, I”™m going to skip past the first two tracks because they do what they”™re supposed to do – get you into the album. However, the third track is where the album starts to pick up. The main riff of “Teethgrinder” is nothing less than bad ass embodied. The rest of the song goes off without a hitch as well. The six-minute title track is a strong contender for the best song on the album as it is the one song that doesn”™t have anything in common with any of the other songs. It”™s even relatively “progressive” (if you like that term). The band starts off well on “Con-sciolist,” however, shortly after, the single noted riffs start to sound a lot like the other ones you”™ve already heard. The album flops until “Reader” which is another one of the best tracks on the disc. “Designer Flesh” fits into the flop category, but the band goes all out on the last three tracks (including the awesomely titled “Guillotension”).

As a summary of that summary, it”™s safe to say that there is a lot of quality content on Don the Reader”™s newest offering. If they are able to trim the fat on their next release, it could make a huge splash in the hardcore community. For now, we still have Humanesque, which despite it”™s shortcomings, still packs a pretty big punch.
