Fortunately, I think that”™s a fantastic sound, and one that I haven”™t heard in overwhelming quantities, except by the man himself. In their defense, Unmoored push the envelope a little further on the heavy side. Whereas the harder edge of EOS is rooted in chunkier riffs, Unmoored rely more on blast-driven mayhem to pound their point home.

All members of this three-piece act excel at their instrument(s) of choice. Vocalist/rhythm/bass guitarist Christian Alvestam pays respect to Swano by cloning both his clean and growled deliveries, and it sounds fantastic. Tomas Johansson”™s leads are shredding of the highest order, and even his slower melodies are worthy of the air guitar. Drummer Henrik Schonstrom holds his own with accurate footwork and some nice fills. All of this is given a respectable Abyss Studios sound, grating and loud, yet clear.

Right from the get-go, Indefinite Soul-Extension”™s opener “Unspeakable Grief” launches into a pair of nasty riffs, which then traverses into a Gothenburgy, clean-vocal chorus. Follow that up with light-speed shredding and bake at 350 for six minutes and you”™ve got a remarkable song. “Phase of Revulsion” is my favorite song on here, mostly due to a godly chorus that alternates clean, growled, and screamed vox and then lays them on top of intense drumming and a fine lead. Nearly every song on here follows the same functional formula of mixing fine Swedish death with laid-back clean sections and stellar shreds. Occasionally some silly haunted house-like keys find their way into a song, but the only two exceptions to that formula are the brief blast of energy called “Morndraper” and the acoustic-driven ballad “Final State Part III”. Fortunately, in the ballad, where I”™d expect to find cheese, instead I find a beautiful solo.

I”™ll admit it, I”™m a pushover for first-rate leads, and Unmoored has more than enough to put a smile on my face. If you don”™t object to the unabashed EOS worship, then you”™ll agree that Indefinite Soul Extension is a fine slab o”™ metal. All aspects are top-quality and I”™ll definitely track down their older albums. Unmoored has delivered one of the best releases from Sweden this year, for sure.

Hospice is assuredly a step up from the also excellent The Dark Horse, which combined some of the best aspects from heavy but ambitious acts like Botch and Breather Resist. Achilles seem to forge their own territory here, diversifying their sound and concentrating less on atmospherics and more on a heavy base, mixed up tempos and interchanging riffs. "We Are Fixtures" is one of the best examples of this, in addition to being possibly Hospice's best track; Rory Vangrol (also of How We Are) kicks it up a notch repetitively screaming "wake up, wake up! We're losing everything!," and leads the charge perfectly -- rarely has Achilles sounded this urgent, while the band floor the listener with a breathtaking sense of dynamics.

As it's comparatively soothing in regards to the rest of Hospice, "Dear Old Tyger That Sleeps" represents Achilles' new "quiet side"; Pelican-like riffs soar and crash, while Vangrol roars like he was Aaron Turner's brother. At 2:32, it's definitely an economical representation of that Hydra Head post-metal style, but Achilles does it extremely well all the same.

Even on The Dark Horse there was a sense of restraint running through Achilles' songs, but its vibe seems to be refreshingly retooled here. On another of Achilles' standout efforts, "Standing Night," the band seem to take cues from the monstrous, epic hardcore of bands like the ever-influencing Modern Life Is War, yet retain their own identity with the song's dangling bassline, riffs that echo and bounce off each other, and the Poseidon-esque boom of "cities burn and tides will rise!."

If that's not enough, "In These Stark Halls" is a 47-second tear-through that might recall, for some, Vangrol's other band, or frankly any band that plays perfect bursts of balls out, ridiculously intense hardcore.

Hospice is an astoundingly diverse and strong followup to Achilles' overlooked debut. Distinct, all-around solid and constantly ferocious, Hospice is a thirty-minute must for those seeking a healthy dose of artistry and effort with their heavy listening.

Vom ersten Ton an herrscht allerfeinstes Geknatter, das mit gelegentlichen Ausflügen in Grind-Gefilde ("Grinded And Exiled") und Crust-Kanten sowie Anleihen an mitteleuropäischen Death Metal ("Alone In The Morgue") auch angenehm abwechslungsreich ertönt. Von schleppend bis blastend reicht das Geschwindigkeitsspektrum und die typisch schwedischen, doomigen Harmonien runden das Spektakel ab. Dazu grunzt ROGGA tief, aber verständlich, während die saugeile Produktion dem "Carnage Junkie" die Krone aufsetzt. Fett und differenziert, dabei traditionell, aber nicht antiquiert, so gehört sich das.

PAGANIZER halten über die gesamte Distanz ein extrem hohes Spaß- und Qualitätslevel, in welchem der Ohrwurm "Blunt Blade Surgery" sogar noch einen Peak darstellt. Textlich wird "klassische" Todeslyrik geboten, was an Titeln wie den genannten oder auch "Mummified Alive" deutlich wird. Die Erstauflage von "Carnage Junkie" kommt im Digipak und enthält gleich fünf exklusive Bonustracks, die soundmäßig deutlich roher daher kommen, das kompositorische Level aber locker halten. Absoluter Pflichtkauf also für alle Elchtod-Fanatiker und auch für alle anderen Liebhaber extremer Sounds überaus empfehlenswert.

Persönlicher Nachtrag:
Es groovt, rumpelt und scheppert. Verpackt in einer druckvollen Produktion.
Mehr erwarte ich auch nicht von einem guten Oldschool DM Album.
